A revised version of the BMW X5 will go on sale in June this year, with a new range of cleaner engines, more standard equipment and updated looks. With a market launch of 5 June 2010 the BMW X5 will receive a mid lifecycle “refresh”. This includes changes to the engine line-up, exterior styling and standard & optional equipment. The original BMW X5 hit the streets in 1999, whilst in 2007, BMW launched the second-generation X5 in answer to competition from the Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. What changes can we expect from the latest version which will be launched on June 5th 2010?

The most obvious change is the new styling. At the front, there are revised bumpers and new headlights, while the fog lights are mounted more centrally. Likewise, the rear has new light clusters, larger tailpipes and a redesigned bumper. At the same time, equipment levels across the range have been improved. The choice of SE and M Sport trims remains, but every model now comes with xenon headlamps and leather upholstery, while Lane Departure Warning, Active Cruise Control and side-view cameras are available as options.

Engine Changes:

Every BMW X5 model now also has an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which combines with the new engines to give better performance and lower emissions on both of the new diesel engines.

The range still starts with the xDrive30d, but the engine is now more powerful than before, cutting half a second off the 0-60mph time. However, at the same time, CO2 emissions are also down – to 195g/km.

The new xDrive40d replaces the xDrive35d, and also combines more power and stronger performance with lower emissions and better economy. It emits 198g/km of CO2, while averaging 37.7mpg.

At the top of the range is the X5’s only petrol engine, the xDrive50i, which has over 50bhp more than the old xDrive48i – and takes a second less to reach 60mph as a result.

But it’s almost not fair to compare the intense and delightful responses of the Elise or the related Exige with other street cars because, with curb weights that hover around 2000 pounds, there aren’t really any other street cars like them. It’s massively larger than the Elise—21.9 inches longer, with a 10.9-inch stretch in the wheelbase—which puts it on par with other sports cars such as the Porsche 911 and Cayman. 2010 Lexus Es 350. From its modest beginning of a two-model lineup the smaller ES and larger LS Lexus has flourished and grown to U.S. luxury market leadership with a strong stable of sedans, coupes and the occasional convertible, including high-efficiency hybrid versions, a variety of SUVs and crossovers, and now a high-performance division.

For 2010, the ES 350 gets a fresh face: new headlamps, grille, grille surround and front bumper with integrated fog lamps flanking a revised lower intake, plus redesigned tail lamps, chrome body side moldings, and new turn signals integrated into the outside mirrors. Also a slew of new features, including Lexus Enform and Safety Connect, a new security and convenience telematics suite similar to GM’s ubiquitous OnStar system.

The only available powertrain is Lexus’ 272-hp, DOHC, 24-valve 3.5-liter aluminum V6, with efficiency enhancing Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), coupled to a 6-speed Electronically Controlled Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i). This super-smooth automatic provides quick kick-down response and sequential manual shifting for those of us who sometimes care to manage our own shift timing.

As expected in a midsize luxo-sedan, the interior is rich and feature-filled, with average space for the class: plenty of room up front for the driver and primary passenger and reasonable real estate for two, or even three, adults in back. Also as expected is Lexus-level craftsmanship, enhanced for 2010 with standard leather-trimmed seating, bright Optitron gauges, premium wood, polished metal and leather accents. The three-spoke wood and leather steering wheel with handy audio, trip computer and information show controls is especially nice, as is the (available) large, simple to use color navigation touch screen.

Also standard are SmartAccess keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power moonroof, 10-way power front seats (with driver-seat memory), power tilt/telescope steering wheel adjustment, rain-sensing wipers, heated outside mirrors, an illuminated entry system with exterior and interior puddle lamps and even illuminated front cup holders. The standard audio system has a six-disc CD changer, automatic sound leveling, an integrated satellite radio receiver (with a complimentary 90-day trial subscription) plus iPod/USB connectivity (in the console), Bluetooth hands-free phone capability and music streaming.

The available Ultra-Luxury Package includes a panorama glass roof, perforated “semi-aniline” leather seating, a power rear sunshade, front passenger seat memory, HID Active Front Lighting (AFS) that follows the steering, that gorgeous wood- and leather-trimmed steering wheel and shift knob, and exclusive “liquid graphite-end” alloy wheels. The long list of stand-alone options includes the HID AFS, heated and ventilated front seats and Intuitive Park Help (IPA) that uses ultrasonic sensors to detect objects close to either bumper. It alerts the driver and shows distances to objects in the multi-information show.

The optional touch-screen nav system uses “Voice Command” casual-language voice recognition, which comprehends conversational commands for control of audio, climate, and navigation. It also comes with a rear back-up camera, integrates control of personalized settings and has Bluetooth phonebook download. An optional 10-channel, 300-watt, 14-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound audio system is available with navigation, and DVD movies can be viewed on the nav screen when the car is in park and the parking brake is engaged.

Also new are available-by-subscription Lexus Enform and Safety Connect. Safety Connect, available on any ES 350 with or without navigation, offers four safety and security features: Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Help (SOS) and Enhanced Roadside Help, which adds GPS data to Lexus’ roadside service. Lexus Enform, available on nav-equipped vehicles, adds Destination Help and eDestination.

Destination Help agents, available 24/7 via on-board cellular equipment, can help find an address, a specific business or type of business (gas station, theater, restaurant) and send coordinates to the nav system for routing. With eDestination, you can save and sort destinations online and send them to your car for download. Lexus Enform also offers subscriptions to XM NavTraffic, XM NavWeather and XM Sports and Stocks.

Standard Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control integrates Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Help (BA). A new VSC cut-off switch is useful if you’re trying to rock the car out of deep snow, mud or sand.

The 10-airbag Supplemental Restraint System includes advanced front and front seat-mounted side bags, rear seat-mounted side bags, full-length side-curtain bags and driver and front passenger knee bags. An optional Pre-Collision System (PCS) includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which maintains a pre-set distance from vehicles ahead. If the PCS senses an impending collision, it pre-initializes Brake Help, tightens the front seat belts, and Active Braking will automatically apply the brakes (up to 0.3 g) if the driver fails to react.

The new 2010 Chevy Equinox, like the midsize Malibu sedan and the Traverse three-row CUV before it, is a whole new ball game for the bowtie brand. It’s much better than the previous model, and in many ways much better than the competition.

To start with, it offers a choice of two new direct-injected, variable-valve-timing engines, a standard 2.4-liter four and an optional 3.0-liter V-6, both happily married to six-speed automatic transmissions. The latter offers 264 horses and 18 mpg city and 25 highway EPA economy. The former pumps out 182 ponies and trumps the class at 22 mpg city, 32 highway. According to Chevy, that translates to a potential highway driving range of as much as 600 miles with the four and more than 500 with the six. Four-cylinder models with available all-wheel drive are rated somewhat lower at 20 mpg city, 29 highway, but there’s a selectable “Eco” mode that adjusts the transmission’s shift points to optimize economy.

The new Equinox leads with Chevy’s signature global face: a two-tier grille with a visible gold bowtie badge. Muscular fender shapes, wraparound headlamps and dual round taillamps are additional design-defining elements. Wraparound rear glass and an aggressive wheels-at-the-corners stance complete the look, while efficiency enhancing aerodynamics are achieved through wind-tunnel-tested measures that include moving the base of the windshield forward approximately three inches (vs. the 2009) for a sleeker profile.

It rides on the same 112.5-inch wheelbase as its predecessor but sits about an inch shorter and an inch wider with a wider front track to improve stability and handling. The rocker panels are integrated into the doors to narrow the step-over area, reducing the chances of brushing pant legs against dirty rockers getting in and out, and the flush-fitting exposed-edge windshield and rear glass reduce wind noise and compliment the tight-fitting quality look.

Inside, the Equinox offers more than ample storage, including an oversized glove box, a closed bin above the center stack and closed storage under the center armrest roomy enough for a laptop computer. We found both front and rear seatsavailable in standard cloth or premium perforated leatheras excellent as any in the class. One especially nice contemporary touch is ice-blue ambient lighting inside and around the “floating” center stack and around the console cupholders.

Another is the 60/40-split-back “MultiFlex” rear seat, which adjusts fore and aft nearly eight inches. Full forward, it opens a roomy 31.4 cu. ft. of storage behind it; full rearward, it provides best-in-class rear legroom. Somewhere in between lies the best balance of both for a given trip. Up front, the driver is well accommodated thanks to 10 inches of fore-aft seat travel, standard power-adjustable seat height and a standard tilt/telescoping steering wheel.

Still another quality feature is the cabin quietness. It’s exceptional for any utility vehicle, let alone a well loved-priced compact CUV. Noise-blocking and -absorbing elements are built into the chassis, engine compartment and interior, and four-cylinder models feature GM’s first production use of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) technology. ANC uses microphones to detect booming sounds inside the vehicle and sends counteracting sound waves through the audio speakers.

One other area where this new Equinox trumps the ancient one, and most volume-priced competitors, is its impressive array of standard and available technologies. Among them are USB audio connectivity, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, a range of premium audio systems (most with internal memory/hard drive for music storage), available seven-inch touch-screen navigation, a rear camera system that displays in the rearview mirror if the car doesn’t have navigation, a rear-seat entertainment system with two independent screens (kids can watch a DVD on one and play games on the other) and a programmable power liftgate.

But the proof, as always, is in the driving. We’ve driven them all in this segment, and most these days are pretty excellent. But this one at this time may well be the best. The fuel-thrifty four is peppy enough for all but heavy loads, and the V-6 is downright powerful with reasonable economy. The cabin is relaxed, commodious and quietest in class. The steering is better than typical electric-boosted systems, the brakes are sure, strong and fade free, and the handling is surprisingly agilemore tall sedan than cargo-capable utility.

The Lincoln MKS for 2010 bristles with technology. To us at least, the (really) big news is the optional EcoBoost engine package. This is a strong arm Lincoln that has few peers when it comes to prodigious thrust. Therein lies the charm of Lincoln’s twin turbo package. It provides the performance of a much larger displacement engine, but when you keep your foot out of the go-pedal, the fuel-efficiency of a smaller V-6. Advantage: Torque. And in this situation, Lincoln could have the best game in town.

The big news brings us to the big debate: horesepower versus torque. Torque is what you feel when you kick down an automatic transmission and it pins you to the seatback. Torque is what allows an engine to run relatively low RPMs down the road, but still prove to be totally useful when you need to effortlessly pull out and pass someone or something. The truth is, horsepower is the result of mathematics and engine speed. Torque is what gets the job done. But there’s more: If you have an engine that produces copious quantities of torque in a low RPM range, that same engine can be tuned to be very efficient. Now, it’s no secret you can build torque in a large number of ways. The old way was to build big displacement, long stroke engines. North American luxury cars relied upon that game plan for decades. But big capacity isn’t always the most energy efficient and, generally speaking, they tend to be more difficult to harness from an ecological perspective. Another way to achieve the same torque results, but simultaneously improving the fuel economy is by way of turbocharging.

And that’s exactly the path Lincoln chose for their new optional 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 for their 2010 Lincoln MKS flagship. As Lincoln points out, “With the fuel economy of a V-6, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine delivers an impressive 355 horsepower and a responsive 350 lb.-ft. of torque across a broad rpm range. That gives the Lincoln MKS the power of a normally aspirated 4.6-liter V-8. It also means a Lincoln MKS can deliver more performance and provide better fuel economy than many of its Asian or European competitors, even some competitors’ V-8s. In order to arrive at this performance level, Lincoln engineers chose to incorporate water cooled, twin parallel turbochargers. They operate simultaneously and work in tandem with a gasoline direct-injection fuel delivery system to produce power instantly when you mash the gas pedal. The result is lag-less performance from the twin-turbo’d engine. Another big benefit is the gasoline direct fuel injection system where fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber by way of high pressure (2,175 PSI, according to Lincoln engineers). Effectively, six individual jets spray fuel directly into the chamber. There is no delay from the time the fuel is injected to the time when it is used by the engine.

Equally important is the fact that the incoming air charge (compressed by the twin turbos) is effectively cooled by the directly injected fuel. Two important side benefits include improved fuel burn and lower emissions. In terms of measurable numbers, the MKS with EcoBoost produces its peak power (355 hp) at a comparatively low 5700 rpm but, most important, the little V-6 produces maximum torque (350 foot-pounds) at a very low 3500 rpm. Equally significant, the torque curve is flat. That means useful power is obtainable (in a big way) almost anywhere you need it. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mileage numbers for the 2010 Lincoln MKS are: 17/24 city/highway for MKS FWD; 16/23 for MKS AWD, and 17/25 city/highway miles per gallon for the 2010 MKS AWD with Ecoboost. As you might have guessed, the prodigious performance provided by the EcoBoost engine grabbed most of our attention (it’s that good). Yet truth be known, the rest of the top-line Lincoln is no slouch either. In order to get the big torque to the ground, the Lincoln incorporates a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission with paddle shift activation backed by an all-wheel-drive system. Lincoln engineers went through the automatic so that it was up to the task of backing the stout twin turbo’d V-6.

Upgrades include reworked gears, more robust friction materials and a new torque converter. Simultaneously, the final drive ratio was reduced to a 2.77:1. That reduced the engine speed under almost all conditions. Nineteen-inch wheels are standard with the MKS EcoBoost engine package and so is an expanded level of standard equpment that includes Intelligent Access with Push Button Start, ambient lighting, adaptive HID headlamps with Auto High-beam, rain-sensing wipers and rear-window power sunshade. Crack open the driver’s door and you’ll find a new three-pod instrument cluster. The steering wheel includes ergonomic grips at the 10:00 and 2:00 O’clock positions, situated perfectly to use the integrated paddle shifters. Seats are solid and, as expected, full-functioned. Lincoln phased out the suede seat material late in 2009. Our test car came equipped with discerning chocolate and graphite leather trimmed seats. Like the outside of the MKS, there’s plenty of well placed chrome trim to remind you this is, after all, a Lincoln. One thing we can’t forget is the wide suite of available technology in the MKS series. For example, the Navigation Package provides voice-activated DVD Navigation with THX II 5.1 surround sound, DVD/CD/MP3 player, includes 10GB music jukebox and SIRIUS Travel Link. The popular SYNC information system returns (it includes the capability to voice-activate most phones and media players). Newly added to SYNC, integrated real time traffic reports, turn by turn directions, sports scores and other useful information. (SYNC Traffic, Directions and Information, however, is not available on vehicles equipped with the optional factory-installed navigation systems.)
