Sport utility vehicles are much safer. That is a common notion among auto aficionados. But they may not be as safe as people reckon.

According to a new crash tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) there are wide variations in the way mid-size SUVs protect motorists in serious side crashes. The results show that sport utilities may not be a whole lot safer than a mid-sized car if you are hit from the side in an auto accident.

“With these mid-sized SUVs we would expect them to do a small better in the side impact test than cars because they’re higher off the ground,” said Adrian Lund of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The IIHS crunched the numbers on the Toyota 4runner, Chevy Trailblazer, Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, as well as the Nissan Pathfinder and Xterra. The manufacturer of Nissan spare parts may find it twice as disappointing.

“The performance of some of these models in the side test was surprising,” said David Zuby, the institute’s senior vice president. “SUVS should have an advantage in side crashes because the driver and passengers ride higher up than in cars.”

“People often reckon they’re safer in one of these vehicles, but many cars hold up better than some of these midsize SUVs in this test,” he added.

In front crashes, the Chevy Trailblazer received an acceptable rating – a step below the other five SUVs which did a excellent job protecting drivers. But several of SUVs were panned after a test that simulates being struck in the side by a similar sized vehicle traveling 31 mph, reported WWAY NewsChannel 3.

In a similar side testing, the Toyota 4Runner and Pathfinder and Xterra models equipped with side air bags received top marks of excellent in the side testing. The Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer received the second-highest rating of acceptable, the Associated Press reported.

“You can see there is just too much intrusion, even in this larger vehicle. We need better protection in side impact,” Lund said.

Only three sport utilities offered excellent protection. They are the Toyota 4Runner, and the Nissan Pathfinder and Xterra. But both Nissan SUVs performed poorly without their optional side airbags. In some cases, side airbags are not a huge deal. The Explorer rated acceptable and the Grand Cherokee and Trailblazer just marginal, they had airbags to protect the head, but not the torso.

All automakers have said they are going to make side airbags standard equipment by 2009. Additionally, they are going to be required by the federal government by 2011.

The TrailBlazer and Grand Cherokee lack air bags that protect the chests and abdomens of front-seat occupants. The combination of weak side structures and the lack of chest protection led to high forces on the driver dummies’ chests and abdomens, Zuby said.

Company officials noted that the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee and the Nissan SUVs received top scores in the government’s side crash tests.

General Motors Corp. spokesman Alan Adler said that the TrailBlazer “meets or exceeds all federal motor vehicle safety standards and was the first midsize SUV to offer rollover-capable head curtain air bags.”

Chrysler LLC spokesman Max Gates said the Grand Cherokee has performed well in internal and external testing and “no single test can determine a vehicle’s overall safety performance.”

“While air bag systems, including side-curtain air bags which are either standard or optional on many of our vehicles, have been shown to mitigate the risk of injury, Nissan believes that seat belts and vehicle structure help provide the primary protection in crashes,” Nissan Motor Co. said in a statement.

I am considering getting one of these in the LE V8. Trading in a 2002 Tahoe LS valued at about $5500. I have looked at virtually every car on the market and this appears to be a good one. The reviews on Edmunds and such were good and I like the look of it.

For anyone out there who has one, do you like it? Pros/Cons?

The slot car is well known by everyone in some form or another. The 1950’s and 1960’s were a time when people were able to enjoy all the new and exciting things being introduced for consumption. Along with new music styles and fads like the hula hoop and slinky, there was the arrival in full force of commercial slot car racing.

Companies like Revell, Monogram, Cox and Strombecker, took detailed models of popular stock cars, Indy cars, formula 1 cars and sports cars, added rudimentary chassis with motors and the hobby of slot car racing was officially was established.

Home sets were sold by the tens of thousands at Christmas time, in HO scale, 1/32 scale and even 1/24 scale. Of course, racing with family and friends on a plastic track is fun, but soon the desire to compete on a larger scale becomes a huge business opportunity.

Commercial raceways in 1963 consisted of small ovals or figure 8’s in the back of hobby stores. Four and six lane layouts were common. All slot car tracks were custom made. There were no standards so no two layouts were the same and the number of lanes were as high as ten. It wasn’t until American Model Raceways went into production of a full line of beautiful Formica sided tracks, that an 8 lane standard was settled on.

As the popularity of slot car racing increased, more companies were formed to meet the rabid demand. Early cars adapted toy electric motors and HO train motors for propulsion. Soon Mabuchi motors of Japan began producing motors made for slot cars.

Prior to 1966, emphasis was put on scale appearance and detail. A slot car was fundamentally a model car with a motor adapted into it. Manufacturers employed master mold makers who would examine photographs at all angles of every new race car being campaigned even some vintage models. Some would even get permission and licensing from the car owners and could precisely measure the actual car then reduce those measurements to 1/32 or 1/24 scale.

The early tires used on slot car were actual rubber, just like on real cars. The tires were molded with the shape and all the detail right down to the Firestone logo. These slot cars were top heavy and really slid around. Getting one around a track with any pace took a very good driver. Most of the people who do slot cars back then or today are not good drivers. Just like Tiger Woods is the best golfer or Michel Schumacher is the best driver, some people have an inborn skill to be good at slot car racing and most don’t.

In 1966 the whole focus of the hobby changed. Going fast and making the slot car easier to drive became the new priority. The beautiful and accurate scale appearance of the slot car would become the casualty.

Today, those early very scale slot cars are by far the most collectible. Some rare slot cars sell for well over $1000. Not bad for something that was $8.95 new.

The auto industry has seen some of the coolest looking vehicles in the form of concept cars. These vehicles are not only made to catch the attention of auto enthusiasts but also show the direction that a company is going in terms of design, features, and performance. These vehicles are often found on motor shows where they can be viewed by car enthusiasts.

Nissan is one company which has taken inspiration from other industries and fused them with their concept vehicles. While these vehicles may not be available to the public, it is evidence that Nissan can design and manufacture such advanced cars. Two of their most notable concept vehicles are inspired by the Xbox 360 and Adidas. The Xbox 360 inspired concept vehicle is the Nissan Urge while the Adidas-inspired one is named the Nissan Note.

The Urge is a roadster which according to Nissan is “motorcycle-inspired”. This futuristic vehicle combines futuristic driving and realistic gaming. This is because the Urge concept can be used to play “Project Gotham Racing 3”. The concept car is the result of the partnership between Microsoft and the Nissan Design America Inc. The Nissan Urge truly combines gaming with driving since a person can play PGR 3 using the steering wheel, accelerator, and brake pedals of the vehicle. This is made possible by the hard work put into the design and construction of the vehicle by Nissan designers and Microsoft engineers.

The vehicle is equipped with the “Xbox 360™ next-generation video game and entertainment system from Microsoft” according to Nissan. The player can use the controls of the car while viewing the action through the 7-inch LCD screen that doubles as a rear view mirror when the car is used for actual driving.

This concept gaming car was unveiled at the 2006 North American International Auto Show. While this particular car is years away from production, it shows how car manufacturers are tuned to the ongoing trend among the new generation of car buyers. If this car is fitted with the same powerful engine used in the Nissan Z car and all its components such as Nissan distributor caps, spark plugs, and the like, one can experience an exhilarating driving experience both in the virtual and the real world.

The impact of the younger generation on the future design of Nissan vehicles is explained by Bruce Campbell, the Vice-President of Nissan Design America. “Nissan conducted an Internet survey of 2,000 eco boomers, a majority of which said technology and gaming are among the most important attributes in their first car,” Campbell said. “Xbox 360 offered the latest in technology and was already a favorite among this audience,” he added. According to the company: “A Nissan URGE driver can, for example, maneuver through the streets of New York, park the car and fire up the Xbox 360, then virtually race through the same streets using the same steering wheel, gas pedal and brake pedal – blurring fantasy and reality in a way that the automotive world has never before seen.”

Another Nissan concept vehicle is based on the mini MPV produced by Nissan for the Japanese and European market – the Nissan Note. The concept vehicle is inspired by German sports apparel manufacturer Adidas. The decision to design a vehicle inspired by Nissan is aimed to catch the attention of the younger generation of car buyers. The current fashion tend being sportswear like those created by Adidas, Nissan developed a vehicle that will embody the same traits that Adidas products posses.

One of the most notable characteristic of these products is the color that is why Nissan created the Adidas inspired Note with youth-oriented colors. To make the concept Note standout, Nissan designed “wearable” items for the vehicle. Of these, the seats are the most notable since consumers have the power to change the covers to match their preference or mood. Aside from this, materials used on sportswear like rubber are used on the vehicle’s interior.

While the Adidas inspired Note and the Urge Concept are just what they are, concept cars, their development shows what Nissan is capable of. Whether they will be mass produced is another story. But for those who love gaming, individuality and driving, there is reason to hope for a brighter future in terms of automobile development.

Why should we bailout the auto industry when they didn't have the foresight of Honda and Toyota?
These two companies and nissan included had the foresight to see that people were going to want eco-friendly cars and now the U.S auto industry wants me to bail them out for continually making trucks and not having the foresight to build High MPG automobiles?

Tata motors has again add up to the top notch headlines, when the Thailand Board of Investment gave green signal to the company’s proposal to make an eco car. The official of the Thailand Board of Investment said that the company is schedule to get its final nod in the proposed internal approval meeting that is going to take place April 2, 2008. Thailand Board of Investment is the Thai equivalent of the India’s Foreign Investment Promotion Board.

Tata Motors Ltd. are the India’s top vehicle maker, that have taken initiative along with the Thai Government to produce the cars that are fuel efficient and more economical. Tata Motors will be the world’s third global car maker to get approval of such a project after the Suzuki Motor Cooperation and SIAM Nissan Automobile, whose projects will going to start the commercial production in the year 2010.

Thailand Board of Investment issued a notification in June 2007 inviting proposals from the global car makers to manufacture the eco cars. Although it has set the minimum pollution standard of Euro IV, with emissions no more than 120 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. Also the car shold satisfy the passenger safety standards.

The entire world is waiting with the baited breadth for the launch of the eco cars. Thai government is looking forward to make country a prominent car producer that meet state of the art emissions and safety norms with stringent fuel economy of 20 km a liter. On the other hand the Thai government has offered tax breaks, duty exemptions, and the other relative incentives if the manufacturer invest a minimum of 5 billion bath and produce 100, 000 units by the fifth year of operations.

In the time when the energy requirements are on the rise, the success of the eco cars are in no doubt, that will meet the international standard and specification. Already the Tata have their presence in the commercial vehicle space of Thailand. But it is not clear that Tata will use Hybrid or any other alternate technology in the Thai eco car project. The eco car project is expected to receive corportate income tax exemption for the period of eight years and the permission to import machinery duty-free.
