Help answer the question about buy used car

What to look for when I buy a used car?
I'm quite a noob when it comes to buying cars. I'd like to buy a used car but I have no idea what to look for, in order to get a good deal and not to get scammed. Do I need to pay attention to engine? Mileage? How do I determine whether a used car is worth the quoted price? Thanks in advance.
